An old Shaker hymn says," It's a gift to be simple, it's a gift to be free..."
Many people have a hard time understanding those words because we no longer understand what it means to be simple. In the scenario, being simple does not refer to intellectual ability. Rather, it means simply keeping the "main thing" in life the "main thing."
A Christian leader was once asked why few people are truly saintly when so many people wish to be great in God's eyes. " The chief reason", he replied, "is that they give too big a place in life to indifferent things." Our life is incredibly complex. In the midst of lives that have more options than we know what to do with, how can we create a sense of order? How can we sort through the possibilities and know which ones to embrace and which to discard?
The answer: Practice simplicity. Know that the "main thing" is the "main thing." And what is the main thing? Seek first the Kingdom of God, says Jesus.
When we focus on displaying God's reign in the world through our obedience, we keep from getting bogged down in matters of little consequence. For us, the "main thing" becomes the "main thing." Life takes on a wonderful freedom and delight. Our lives grow simple - and yet amazingly rich and great!
I love you is the simplest three-word sentence, but contain the greatest feeling in life. I love you is the reflection of my heart and it grows stronger and stronger with time going on...
